She awoke the next morning to the usual sound of knocking on her bedroom door. The gentle tapping sound on the heavy oak door was being made by Cherise, the maid. She was waking Madeline up for her breakfast in the dining room.
"Yes, Cherise, I'm awake," she said, agitated. âYou can stop the hammering now."
"Sorry, madam."
Madeline put on her robe and went down to the dining room to wait to be served her breakfast. She sat at the breakfast table and remembered the salesman was coming this morning with the robot to show her. Rafael, the chef, served her breakfast to her. She motioned him away and ate the food in front of her. After she quickly finished her breakfast, she went back up to her bedroom to dress for the day and headed to her office, where she would meet with the robotic servant salesman.
"Oh, Cherise," she called out to the maid.
"Yes, madam?"
"Cherise, Wallace is no longer with us."
"Oh, madam. I am so sorry. How did this happen?" Cherise asked in her slight French accent, saddened by the news and assuming the wrong thing.
"No, Cherise, don't be so dramatic. I don't mean he's dead. I mean he no longer works or lives here."
"Oh, I see."
"So, until I replace him, which may be today, you will be the lead servant. I am expecting someone shortly, and I do not, under any circumstances, want to be disturbed after he arrives. Understand?"
"Yes, madam. I will see to it you are not disturbed."
With that, Madeline closed the door to her office and awaited the salesman she was so eager to meet with. She glanced at the clock on her wall and at the precise time she had scheduled with the salesman, there was a knock on her office door.
"Madam. There is a gentleman here with a large box. He said he is here for an appointment with you," Cherise said on the intercom.
"Yes, yes. Send him in."
"Yes, madam."
A few moments later, her office door opened and in came a young man who appeared to be in his late twenties. He had with him a big wooden box on a hand truck. He entered the room and parked the hand truck in front of and a few feet away from Madeline's desk. He walked over to Madeline with his hand outstretched to shake her hand. She remained seated, and as they shook hands, he introduced himself.
"Mrs. Vanderling, my name is Thomas Stone. I represent The ServBot Company, and I'm here because you asked for a demonstration of our product."
"Yes, I know why you are here, Mr. Stone," she said, her tone dripped with arrogance.
Thomas could almost feel her high-handedness but did not allow himself to be affected. He proceeded with his sales pitch. He handed her a brochure. Madeline glanced through the pages as he began.
"We at The ServBot Company pride ourselves on manufacturing life like one-of-a-kind servant robots. Each one is unique, and no two are alike; ever. We are the only company who can manufacture these because we patented the process.
